10 Cheap Supplies from the Drug Store

A followup on the post on 12 cheap chemicals from the Hardware Store:

The drug store isn’t just a place to grab a prescription or hang out with a soda jerk (are there any soda jerks left?), you can get a lot of decent chemicals and supplies there too! Heck, there’s a reason why the old term for “pharmacist” is “chemist.”

The list after the jump:

  • 3% Hydrogen Peroxide – a decent oxidizer
  • 50%, 70%, 91% isopropyl alcohol – I buy 91%, for cleaning, alcohol lamps, and reactions.
  • Deionized Water – this is extra clean water, and is the only kind of water you should use for reactions and final rinses of glassware.
  • Acetone nail polish remover
  • Alum (AKA: aluminum potassium sulfate AKA: KAl(SO4)2*12H2O)
  • Smelling Salt (AKA: ammonium carbonate AKA: (NH4)2CO3)
  • Vitamin C (AKA: Ascorbic Acid)
  • No-Doz (AKA: Caffeine)
  • Latex, Vinyl, and/or Nitrile gloves
  • Tweezers
  • Hair dye bottles (I use these exact ones for rinse bottles all the time, and they don’t leak – even when carried around in backpacks on the train in Chicago – they’re amazing!)
